“Warm is the combined vision of husband and wife team Winnie Beattie and Rob Magnotta. It’s on the border of Nolita and Chinatown, on a pretty secretive block and carries womens wear, kids, toys, jewelry, and a well edited selection of books and housewares. Warm is not only a store in which you walk in and out, it is a place made in such a way that makes you want to stick around and hang out, a place where you can bring your lunch in the backyard or your kid to a music class.
Warm’s curation of brands blurs the line of daywear/nightwear. I feel like all of our clothes are pretty versatile depending on the way one decides to style them. The cuts are great, the fabrics are really high quality, and overall it is very luxurious store but without making a big deal about it or seeming formal.  I also feel that Winnie’s choices of brands (Vanessa Bruno, L’Agence, Tocca, Ulla Johnson, Finger in the Nose) allow a pretty wide range of people with different styles to identify with the store while WARM has a very precise and strong identity.
We attract a really wide range of women: the uptown mum, the trendy girl from the hood, the model, the celebrity, the curious tourist, the mature woman, yet what they share is a love of high quality clothing and a certain taste for fashion that is effortless and natural. I think we carry clothing that gives you an immediate style without looking like you are trying too hard.
As for the men, we will start carrying a rack of clothing for the holidays so our girls can buy for their guys. For now, the men who come to the store have the status of consultant for their wives or girlfriends or friends and guys who have very good taste for interior design!”

“We strive to present our client with a unique, high quality product in a beautiful environment.
We don’t sell much clothing. We sell jewelry, accessories, tools and interiors. We do sell Amy Glenn hand dyed and painted vintage t-shirts that are very special.
We carry a wide range of heirloom quality, hand made jewelry from everyday pieces, commitment jewelry and talismans. We specialize in vintage and antique jewelry and accessories that I hand pick.
Some of my favorite jewelry designers are Lola Brooks, Chad Ypon, Manon, Kria, Lauren Wolf, Made Her Think, Michael Spirito, Nick Potash, Polly Wales and Symbiotique. I also make a line of jewelry in silver and gold.
My favorite accessories designers in the store are RTH (leather goods) and Michele Quan (ceramic art and object). For Christmas we will be carrying Kapital, incredible boiled wool mufflers out of japan that really is like nothing else. Kapital is a father and son team that specialize in denim but also make beautiful accessories.

MERCHANT ARCHIVE LONDON, 19 Kensington Park Road, London
“One of my favourite vintage stores in the world. The owner Sophie has such an incredible eye. It’s not necessarily that’s she’s hunting for labels but she’s always on the look out for really special pieces that have stories behind them. I’ve got dresses from there that span many decades. She also sells new labels like Karen Walker and Made in Heaven. I had a soft spot for her old location in Kensal Rise because of the old Lipton general store interior but now Merchant Archive is in Notting Hill which means I have to fight more people for the best pieces!”
SHAKESPEARE AND CO., 37 Rue de la Bûcherie 75005, Paris
“It’s a bit of an obvious one but this is such a brilliant book store in Paris and it feels like you’re in a film set when you’re inside. I think I’ve had one too many fantasies about being hit on by a cute bookish fellow who shares my love of Evelyn Waugh and Somerset Maugham. The best thing about the store is the smell - it really SMELLS of books.”
ALFIES ANTIQUE MARKET, 13-25 Church Street, Marylebone, London
“Alfie’s is an institution in London for me. I grew up coming here and exploring all the different crevices of vintage clothing, antiques and furniture even though it was too expensive for me. My favourite store is Tin Tin Collectibles in Alfie’s - Leslie, the owner sells really wonderful properly old pieces and again has a real eye for special detailing. “
GRIMOIRE, Tokyo, Japan
“If all the characters in Grimm Fairy Tales went shopping, this is where they’d go. It’s a weird and wonderful vintage shop where the interiors are just as exciting as the clothes - strange cuckoo clocks, foliage-covered walls, gothic wood carvings and Irish folk music being piped in as a soundtrack. I always love the way Japanese take something quintessentially European and take it to a whole other place. The vintage is Gunne Saxe, Little House on the Prarie-esque, which isn’t necessarily my style but I’ve always found great items like odd aprons, embroidered shirts at reasonable prices. The shop assistants or the Grimoire girls are so cute. They look like dolls and are very helpful if you’re looking for something specific.”
KITA KORE, Tokyo, Japan
“Kita Kore is located in Koenji and is a strange shack comprising of five shops. You’ll spot it a mile away as it’s got a paper mache dinosaur sticking out of it. All the shop in there that sell vintage, remade items, customised items and new designers. It’s a really funny place to explore. Rachel who’s originally from the UK but now lives in Tokyo owns one of the stores illi and she’s like my Kita Kore guru slash handy translator. I picked up some amazing vintage pieces at Garter, one of the stores in Kita Kore - old Versace and Jean Paul Gaulter Junior - my two vintage designer label weaknesses.”
VV Rouleaux, 102 Marylebone, London
“It sells ribbons and ribbons only. It’s trimmings heaven here and there’s something quite old fashioned about the store that makes it a bit of an institution in London. It’s not as posh as Mokuba in Paris but it makes it more friendly.”

BIRD Women, 220 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY
“Bird Cobble Hill is a mix of Williamsburg and Park Slope. We get equal parts: cool moms and cool young girls. Our customers are well informed and they are design conscious. They are also some of the most inspiring women I have met, everything from entrepreneurs to authors, artists, and fashion editors. And one of the best parts of my job is forming relationships with these women, and styling them and getting them to try new things. I love seeing pieces go from runway looks to the real women that end up living in them!
We are known for our prints and color selections. If Jen (Mankins) was ordering a dress that comes in black and fuschia, its almost a sure thing that she would opt for the fuschia! A lot of women come in looking for dresses, but I like to see a gal looking to go a little outside the box with mixing separates and clashing prints. Bird is also a great place to get familiar with new and slightly more obscure designers like Japanese label Mina Perhonen and Argentinian label Pesquiera.”

FRENCH GARMENT CLEANERS Co., 85 Lafayette, Brooklyn, NY
“French Garment Cleaners Co. carries a well-curated collection of high-end-ish everyday clothing. A.P.C., Rachel Comey, Isabel Marant, Band of Outsiders, Rag & Bone, Our Legacy, and such as. These clothes are smart, easy pieces that know what they’re doing, but don’t need to crow about it. Our pieces transition from work to hang out and vise versa, easy peasy. We’ll be carrying more suits and fancy occasion pieces soon, as well as homewares and a whole host of other transitions come Fall… Keep your eyes peeled!
We clothe the Brooklyn creative types who have impeccable taste. A person who’s closet is classy without being stuffy; clever, but not forced. They read movies and consume books. They are and/or know about all the most important musicians and artists, movers and shakers. They have great stories about traveling. They are cooler than me, but kind enough to not make that a thing. They probably have a garden. They like dogs.
I often joke that working here feels like working in a grown-up version of Sesame Street. People stop by just to hang out and catch up. We are part of the neighborhood, and that fact feels very present. We’ve been here for six years, but sometimes people still mistake us for a dry cleaner! So we’re still sort of out of the mainstream, but we’re a kind of a destination spot because there’s nothing else like us around here. I’m the newest eddition to the French Garment Cleaners Co. family, and I couldn’t feel more welcomed or happy to be here. Also, this shop smells really good. So that’s pleasant.”

SATINE, 8134 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA
“Essentially we have Satine to thank for the entire 3rd street shopping area.  Jeannie Lee’s store is whimsical& quirky & sophisticated & classic all at once.  You can get your Lanvin on here, but also your Steven Alan & your Suno.  Oh and did I mention they carry Wren?  I like them for that too.”
LE LABO, 8385 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA
“I’m not sure which I like better, their products or the way this store looks.  I’m a big amber / patchouli fan and Le Labo has LOTS for me, but done in a pretty way so I’ll never be accused of being a dirty hippie.”
OK, 8303 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA  & 1716 Silverlake Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA
“A general store of sorts, but the kind of general store that carries jewelry, special books and things from Japan.  Larry Schaffer is a master at the mix and I want it all.”
A.P.C, 150 South La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, CA
“I’m obsessed with APC.  Thank God they have a store in LA.  Oh, thank, God.”
TENOVERSIX, 8425 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA
“Basically, Kristen Lee & Brady Cunningham, the ladies behind TenOverSix, rule.  Mix of next-big-thing apparel brands and curated art objects, books, music — shopping for the smart.  They know how to get their party on on top of it all— we screened both Wren’s Fall film starring Tavi Gevinson & our Gia Coppola directed Spring one as well.  Like I said, they rule.”

A DÉTACHER, 262 Mott Street, New York City
“Mona (Kowalska) shop is a refection of her impeccable sense of style. Her curated selection of clothes and vintage jewelry are incredibly chic.”
BOOKMARC, 400 Bleecker Street, New York City
“This shop has an amazing selection of art & photography books, novels, cookbooks, hard to find first editions, and DVDs. It’s so well curated. They are the only books that I don’t read off an iPad. And the staff - not only are they cool, they are nerds at heart that are super helpful and know their craft well.”
STELLA DALLAS, 281 North 6th Street, Brooklyn, NY
“I shop for well priced vintage clothing and for inspiration at Stella Dallas. Everything in this store has a story. And the home shop next door - the textiles are unbelievable!”
LOVE ADORNED, 269 Elizabeth Street, New York City
“Love Adorned is a great place to shop for, not only for yourself but for gifts. They have an amazing selection of jewelry and home stuff. It has such a great vibe. It’s like you’re in Marfa or Ashville but in New York City.”

STEVEN ALAN ANNEX, 103 Franklin Street, New York City
“One thing I love about Steven Alan Tribeca is the incredible range of ages and backgrounds our shoppers have. Being the first Steven Alan store, our regulars are local people who have been coming in for years and have watched the company grow into a place that attracts other artistically-consious individuals from all over the world with appreciation for classic design with character. Also, because of Franklin’s relatively low foot traffic, it’s not a shop most people stumble upon, so our customers are almost always here intentionally - they’re interested in what we’re doing, and that feels really special to be a part of.”

“What’s there to say that hasn’t already been said about Opening Ceremony, I guess.”
ABOUT GLAMOUR, 107A North 3rd Street, Brooklyn, NY
“It’s a small second-hand store in Williamsburg run by super-friendly Japanese people. They often have quirky and fun gently-worn stuff by well-known brands like Comme des Garcons, Vivienne Westwood, and Issey Miyake, and a bunch of random obscure Japanese brands that you won’t easily find in the States.”
BIRD Men & Women, 203 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY
“I get my haircut at a place a couple doors down from here and I always pop in for a look-see and usually end up buying something cute. There’s always a good selection of fun prints and colorful stuff — right up my alley.”
RALPH LAUREN, 867 Madison Avenue, New York City
“One time I was invited to a black-tie event but I don’t own any ties. I had to stop by here on the way to the venue to buy a bowtie (it had cute little doggies printed on it). They even tied it on for me because, yeah, I don’t know how to do that.”
UNIQLO, 546 Broadway, New York City
“For cheap underwear. Also, they probably have the most racially diverse staff I’ve ever seen, and they’ve all been trained to do the very-japanese-way-of-exchanging-money-and-cards-with-two-hands-thing at the register.”
